“Some massive security changes happened”: Emilia Clarke Reveals Marvel Made ‘Game of Thrones’ a Nightmare for Her

Emilia Clarke Reveals Marvel Made 'Game of Thrones' a Nightmare for Her

Emilia Clarke’s introduction to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is something the audience of the franchise, as well as avid fans of the actress, have been looking forward to and eagerly waiting for. Being a part of such an ambitious endeavor requires some level of adaptability to accustom oneself to well-established and obligatory workplace practices. Marvel is especially particular about the principles they follow.

Usually, as is the case with most cinematic universes, the possibility of leaks and spoilers making their way to the enjoyers of a particular media is a setback that needs extra precaution. However, over the years, Marvel Studios have shown their efficiency when it comes to avoiding such instances—barring, of course, the times when the actors of the franchise themselves ended up committing the deed.

They’ve implemented a system that, as claimed by Emilia Clarke, haunted the actress even before she committed to the MCU project, back in her Game of Thrones days.

Emilia Clarke Sheds Light On Marvel’s Security Measures Against Leaks

For the 36-year-old actress, dealing with spoilers and leaks is a routine affair. It simply comes with the job. However, the actress revealed that the experience of having to work around such inconveniences was made easier once she joined the MCU endeavor. For Secret Invasion, the Me Before You star became better equipped to handle scenarios where someone could potentially keep egging her on to spill the beans.

Emilia Clarke claimed that when faced with such instances in real life, she used to simply reply with, “Dude, Marvel. I can’t say anything.” That is exactly how the actress managed to keep her lips sealed and her secrets safe for such a long time

Besides such efforts, Clarke suggested that Marvel’s way of controlling insider information, spoilers, and leaks was to utilize strict security measures—the impact of which was felt by the Game of Thrones star even before she stepped into the MCU. The talent recalls that in the later seasons of her uber-acclaimed fantasy-drama TV show, “some massive security changes” were taking place. And you’d be shocked to know why they were implemented in the first place!

How The Creators Of Game Of Thrones Learnt From Marvel

As it turns out, the showrunners of the famed TV show were particularly inspired by Marvel’s way of functioning and handling potential leaks. Emilia Clarke recalls having a conversation with the creators of Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, where they told the British actress that they wanted to do whatever Marvel does. And this involved the act of not printing the lines of the script on paper!

The following is specifically what Clarke stated:

“I was chatting with David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] and they were like, ‘Marvel. We’re just learning from Marvel. Whatever Marvel’s doing, we just want to do that.’ So that became, you don’t print anything—and then there was like me and Peter Dinklage being like, ‘I need it on paper! I can’t learn my lines without it being on paper!’”

While truly a strict practice to enact, it does make sense keeping in mind how creators of most Hollywood shows, series, and films have had the misfortune of information and plot-relevant details getting leaked by none other than the very people that are involved in the production; the people that work on-set.

Emilia Clarke will be a part of the MCU.
Emilia Clarke was anxious about fans tracking her location

The pressure of avoiding leaks and spoilers from getting to the mass weighs heavy in the hearts of some—Emilia Clarke being one such person. Clarke, who plays the role of Talos’ daughter, G’iah in Marvel’s Secret Invasion, remembers being in a petrifying Zoom meeting with Marvel security. She felt like someone would “come and kill” her if she dared to say anything.

The Last Christmas talent, in fear of sensitive information getting out, also took to an extreme course of action where she removed her phone’s SIM card for the first few days of filming for Secret Invasion. She dreaded the possibility of fans potentially tracking her down.

There’s a reason behind the actress’ paranoia, as she is well-versed in having spoilers leaked for her acting endeavors. This was particularly true for Game of Thrones“It just sucks. Not that I did the spoiling,” stated Clarke, expressing how dejected she felt when GOT spoilers made their way to the public.

It took a while for the skilled Hollywood star to truly be at peace with the matter. After a while, she “chilled out” when it came to worrying about potential leaks. Regardless, one has to appreciate the lengths the actress is willing to go in safeguarding her projects from getting unfairly spoiled for other people.

We truly admire both Marvel’s and the actress’ tenacity when it comes to such matters.

The first episode of Secret Invasion is now available for streaming on Disney+.
