Man City lost to Arsenal in the English Super Cup match. It was a match where coach Pep Guardiola’s army took the lead from the 77th minute. But Leandro Trossard’s late goal in the 90+11 minute helped Arsenal to equalize.
The score 1-1 forced the match into a penalty shootout. Here, Kevin De Bruyne and Rodri failed to make Man City lose 1-4.
Earlier, the Premier League organizers announced that the 2023-2024 season will apply a new law on how injury time is calculated. Accordingly, the number of minutes of injury time will add to the time when the ball is dead because of a goal, a fixed situation, an injury, etc.
This method has been applied in the 2022 World Cup. And it makes the number of extra minutes much higher than before. In the last English Super Cup match, the referees announced the number of extra time in the second half up to 8 minutes.
In fact, the match lasted even longer because of the pause after the strong collision between Thomas Partey and Kyle Walker. It was this extended injury time that partly helped Arsenal equalize and put the game into a penalty shootout.
Sharing with Marca, coach Pep Guardiola was quite harsh.
“It is not annoying, we have to get used to it,” said City boss Guardiola.
“I had the feeling, not because we were winning 1-0, it was just the fact I had a feeling that much didn’t happen to extend by eight minutes.
“But it is a good question for the International Board [the International Football Association Board who instructed the rule change] and all the people because they don’t consult the managers, they don’t consult the players.
“What is their opinion, we have to accept it and we have to do it.
“Now the games will not be 90 minutes, they will be 100 minutes, that’s for sure. It never happened today and it was eight minutes, imagine if they extend for goals and every time you score a goal in a game [that is] 4-3. You put 30 seconds, 45 seconds on for seven goals, tomorrow morning at 9am I am here playing.”

With this defeat, Pep Guardiola certainly cannot reproduce the historic 6th record he did with Barcelona in 2009.
Meanwhile, asked about the added time, Arteta said: “At the end, it’s about effective time.
“I think it’s really good to do that, because it was going too far I think and now teams are going to have to think twice.
“Now we have to be prepared to play 100 minutes because it’s going to happen every single week.”
Both sides will now turn their attention to the start of the Premier League season next weekend.
