After hearing that Inter Miami was interested in acquiring Luis Saurez, the striker expressed his wish to rejoin with old colleague Lionel Messi and retire together.
Luis Suarez, a former Barcelona striker, has revealed his intention to retire with Lionel Messi.
Suarez and Messi were colleagues at Barcelona from 2014 to 20 and established one of Europe’s most productive striker pairings. The pair won 13 major trophies, including four La Liga championships and one Champions League victory.
Suarez moved on from Barcelona to Atletico Madrid, where he won another Spanish league title. He left Europe to return to South America and sign with Uruguayan club Nacional in 2022, before joining Gremio on a two-year contract in January.
Suarez was heavily linked with a move to Miami earlier this summer, following the signings of Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. However, it appears that a potential move is no longer on the table, and Suarez will remain in Brazil.
Since Messi’s arrival in Miami, the influence has already been felt. The Argentina legend has scored three goals in two outings for the club, including one on debut and two in a 4-0 win over Atlanta United in the League Cup.
Many preparations were made in Miami before to Messi’s visit. The club constructed bleachers in all four corners of the DRV PNK Stadium to add 3,000 additional seats, bringing the total capacity to 21,000 people.
Messi, Busquets, Alba, and Suarez were all teammates at Barcelona. Suarez and Messi were great friends at Camp Nou and have remained such to the present day.
Suarez, now 36, has stated that he would like to retire at the same club as Messi one day. It remains to be known what the striker’s future contains, but it is apparent that he would like to rejoin with his former teammate one day.
“With Messi, we dream of retiring together”, Suarez told the Uruguayan TV show Punto Penal.
“It was something that we always planned when we were at Barcelona. And from one year to the next I went to Atletico and he went to PSG. We dreamed of it and we talked about it that after Barcelona we would go to the United States and nothing happened at the time.
“Now he made the decision to go there and from what you can see, he looks happy and we hope that at some point that possibility will occur.”
