1. Blurring the Space Between Outdoors and Indoors

MARTHASTEWART

With the pandemic going on, most of us have been forced to spend most of our time at home, and this started the idea of blurring the lines between outdoors and indoors.

How to Bring Outdoors Inside?

  • Design a tiny herb garden in the kitchen or on a windowsill.
  • Hang some baskets on a window or a balcony so that it gives you the sense of looking out at a garden.
  • Grow a climber along a trellis next to a balcony or window.

How to Take Indoors Outside?

  • Use hanging plants or tall shrubs outdoors to screen areas that will give you the feeling of an indoor space.
  • Place a hammock or lounge chair outdoors to make it more comfortable to laze around.
  • Set up lamps and lights to make a seating area even during the evening and night.

2. Invite Wildlife to Your Yard

Invite bees, butterflies, and other wildlife by growing colorful flowers. Do not forget to add a birdfeeder and make a birdbath, too.

3. Add Different Hues and Colors

This year will see eye-catching and trending colors. Grow Heart of Jesus, Bicolor Iris, Caladium Florida, Coleus Bicolor, and more to create a simple yet colorful garden.

You can include the best foliage plants. We have some great ones here.

4. Grow Native Plants

The United States Department of Agriculture also promotes native gardening as including such plants provide nectar, pollen, and seeds that serve as food for native butterflies, insects, birds, and other animals. They also:

  • Require fewer fertilizers and pesticides.
  • Being native to the environment, these plants require less water.
  • They also help in reducing air pollution.

5. Make Yourself a Relaxing Space

Create a tranquil space for yourself and your family by growing some plants connected to your happy times or childhood, as it is always believed to evoke happy memories.

Choose plants according to colors that make you feel calm and content like Jasmine, Lavender, Heliotrope, Mint, Rosemary, Lemon Balm, Hyacinth, Rose, Magnolia, Gardenia, Wisteria, Honeysuckle and such.

Also, choose plants with velvety soft textures like Lamb’s Ear, Hyacinth, Scented Geranium, Panda plants, and such in spaces where you can easily reach out and feel them against you as you walk by.

Alternatively, you can also consider installing a water feature for a calming effect or growing ornamental grasses for the rustling sound.

6. Re-Design Balconies & Porches

If your home has limited space and is only confined to a medium-sized balcony or a porch, you can get creative with that space.

Use window boxes to grow colorful plants like Petunias, Sweet Potato Vine, Coleus, Fuchsia, Snapdragon, Dusty Miller, and such as well as herbs like chervil mint, parsley, and cilantro. You can also grow these plants in containers:

Place chicken wire to the balcony’s railing and grow some climbing plants or vines like Bougainvillea, Devil’s ivy, Bengal clock vine, Blue morning glory, and Star jasmine.

7. Add Dark Effect with Deep Color Plants

One of the trending gardening ideas is to create a garden using plants with bright blooms and exciting foliage colors like chartreuse or silver to make for a fascinating space.

Grow Heuchera, Ninebark, Crape Myrtle, Smoke Bush, and Sweet Potato Vine.

An outdoor shower would look fabulous in any backyard, and it is also a trend that is soon becoming popular. It was a feature at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2021.

Most gardeners choose from wall-mounted and simple portable showers to more elaborate, luxurious spaces for a shower outside in style and amidst the green.

15. Build an Outdoor Office

According to experts, 53 percent of the American workforce is set to work from a hybrid remote space even in 2022. So, if you are in the same category, you can design a beautiful and healthy workspace for yourself on your deck or patio or in the backyard.

Place a lounger, a side table or a bistro table, and a patio chair in the space. Use dense plants to screen the space from the neighbor’s view or the neighborhood’s noise and add some shade to your seating area.

Use hanging baskets for suitable plants such as Begonia, Fuchsia, Lantana, Million Bells, and more or grow tropical plants like Bird of Paradise, Sansevieria, Ribbon Dracaena, Corn Plant, and more to create a bolder, greener look.
