Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has spoken highly of Cristiano Ronaldo as the striker celebrates 20 years of representing his country in the national team. Ronaldo made his debut for Portugal in 2003 and has since scored 38 goals in 123 appearances, becoming the highest scorer in international football history.
Martinez praised Ronaldo’s remarkable achievement, stating that having 20 years of involvement with the national team and playing 200 games is a unique feat in international football, and this legacy rightfully belongs to Cristiano Ronaldo. He also highlighted the significance of having a player of Ronaldo’s caliber in the squad, as his experience and quality set a high standard for younger players to aspire to.

We are proud to have a player with 200 appearances who is unique in world football. It brings uniqueness to the dressing room and without a doubt, Ronaldo is the best player in the world.”
During more than 15,000 minutes for his national team, Ronaldo helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and win the UEFA Nations League in 2019.
The president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Fernando Gomes, spared no praise for the Al Nassr striker, after Cristiano Ronaldo completed two decades of service for the national team: “This is an amazing feat. Ronaldo’s contribution is more than a milestone of 20 years of service to the Portugal team. It’s impressive that a player as influential as Ronaldo has been at the top for so long and the way he’s done that is really impressive.”

He continued: “During the 20 years at the peak of his career, Ronaldo’s service to the national team was an undeniable 20 years of success for the Portuguese national team. He and his teammates reached the pinnacle, by winning Euro 2016 and the Confederation Cup 2019.”
President Gomes praised Ronaldo’s dedication to the national team and his homeland: “Over the years, what I have to emphasize is the passion and love that Ronaldo has. He is always dedicated, ready to contribute and play for Portugal. It’s love for the team and for this country.”

The 5-time Ballon d’Or winner has set a record for the most appearances for the national team, which is 200 times. Portugal, meanwhile, have consistently advanced to the knockout stages of every World Cup during Ronaldo’s time in action, with the highest finish being 4th in 2006.
